A Look at Our Safety Culture – Over the Years

The oil and gas industry has made evolutionary strides in our safety culture in the last twenty-five years. There was a time when deadly incidents were commonplace. They were considered the cost of doing business. Today we are doing a lot better.

As the industry has changed, we have utilized safety professionals, some who have come up through the ranks and some who have come from outside the industry.

These safety professionals have made major contributions to the evolution of our safety culture over the years. Some see themselves as a resource to support safe and efficient operations embracing the behavioral side of safety.

Some have come as safety cops who focus strictly on regulatory compliance. Some have come with an emphasis on procedures. Some are there only to investigate incidents after the fact.

(…)We need to get these guys to be good coaches and not bad cops, and you will see vast improvements in your safety and efficiency.
