New Orleans has a way of reminding you that experience matters.
We recently had the opportunity to deliver a workshop with a group of offshore leaders and workers in the South. And, as always, I walked into the room ready to teach — but just as ready to learn.
There’s a certain mindset you find among many experienced offshore workers down here. Practical. Straight-talking. Proud of their craft. They’ve seen enough to know that the job rarely goes exactly to plan.
Our conversations weren’t about telling experienced people how to do their jobs. They were about refreshing the why and the how behind the safe systems of work they already use every day — and making sure those systems continue to work in the real world.
A big part of the discussion was leadership.
The experienced guys aren’t just managing work anymore. They’re leading a new generation of younger, less-experienced people who are learning the trade from them.
That responsibility matters.
Because culture isn’t simply what’s written in a procedure. It’s what the next generation sees, hears and experiences from the people leading them.
Great workshop. Great conversations. And plenty of learning for me too.
