People need to understand the purpose and intent of the process of Permit To Work. When they understand this, they will realize that this is not a tick-the-box exercise—that this has life-or-death consequences.
When the process itself is simplified to the point that the common person can use it, you will start to see the power of Permit To Work on a daily basis. Letting people know purpose and intent, sticking to the basics of cross-checking, informing, and using a higher level of risk management and authorization will allow your Permit to Work to endure safe and efficient operations while performing high-risk work.
Finally, I’m going to add a reminder about Permit to Work that applies to all tools: a piece of paper will not save you.”
